Everything you need to know about Basilicata
By Air: The closest airports are Bari Karol Wojtyla (BRI) (~65 km from Matera) and Naples Capodichino (NAP) (~240 km). Shuttle services connect Bari airport to Matera (55 min).
By Car: The A3 motorway serves the western side (Maratea, Pollino). The SS96 connects Bari to Matera. The A16 Naples–Bari motorway (exit Candela) serves the Vulture area and Melfi.
By Train: Ferrovie Appulo-Lucane (FAL) connects Bari to Matera and Potenza. Trenitalia's Naples–Reggio Calabria line stops at Maratea and Lagonegro.
Basilicata offers a wide range of accommodation, from world-famous cave hotels in Matera's Sassi to agriturismos in the countryside, charming B&Bs and campsites in the national parks.
- Spring (Apr–Jun): mild temperatures, green landscapes, few crowds. Best for hiking and cultural visits.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): hot inland (30–38°C). Perfect for the beaches of Maratea and Metaponto.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): excellent for wine harvest, mushrooms and photography. Pleasant temperatures.
- Winter (Dec–Mar): cold and snowy in the mountains. Matera off-season is magical and very quiet.
Car rental is strongly recommended — it's the only practical way to visit most attractions. Rentals available at Bari, Naples and Matera airports.
FAL trains cover Bari–Matera–Potenza. Buses (SITA Sud) cover inter-city routes with reduced weekend schedules.
Matera ZTL: the historic centre and Sassi area has traffic restrictions. Hotels provide access permits for guests.
Lucanian cuisine is simple but full of flavour. Must-try: Matera IGP Bread, Cruschi Peppers, Aglianico del Vulture DOCG wine, Podolico Caciocavallo cheese, Rotonda DOP Beans, and traditional lagane pasta with chickpeas.
- Rent a car: essential for exploring independently.
- Book early: Matera hotels in the Sassi fill up months in advance.
- Wear good shoes: the cobblestones of Matera's Sassi require non-slip, closed footwear.
- Cash: smaller villages still prefer cash payments. Always carry some euros.
